Upgrades begin at Jim Jim Creek
Upgrades will shortly commence at Jim Jim Creek crossing to improve dry season access to the Twin Falls plateau walk and surrounding area.
Works to raise the crossing will begin on Monday 19 July following the approval of plans by the area’s Traditional Owners.
Park Manager Shaun Barclay said the upgrade will take up to 6 weeks and improve safety at the crossing.
“Jim Jim Creek crossing has high water levels even during the dry season, which makes it difficult to access the Twin Falls area,” Mr Barclay said.
“Although Twin Falls Gorge is unlikely to reopen this year, raising Jim Jim Creek crossing will allow visitors to safely reach the plateau walk this dry season and experience the incredible views down into the gorge.
“The steep ascent through the rugged stone country of the Arnhem Land plateau, ending at the Twin Falls lookout, lets you view the splendour of the falls from above.
“We are continuing to investigate solutions to improve access to the gorge itself, working with Traditional Owners and technical experts to develop plans for upgraded viewing platforms at the base of the falls.”
Upgrades at the Jim Jim and Twin Falls area are part of a $276 million investment by the Australian Government into the upgrade and renewal of infrastructure in Kakadu National Park, delivered by Parks Australia in consultation with Traditional Owners under the Kakadu Tourism Master Plan.
