Azure kingfisher

Azure kingfisher

The tiny, colourful and highly elusive azure kingfisher is found around the edges of most Kakadu waterways.

You might see this shy bird skimming along the surface of creeks and billabongs as it hunts for fish before ducking back into the vegetation.

What it looks like

With striking deep blue plumage, a bright orange breast and a long sharp beak, azure kingfishers are highly sought after by birdwatchers.

Where to see it

Azure kingfishers are often heard in vegetation near rivers and can be seen diving into the water for small fish. Look for it at Yellow Water (Ngurrungurrudjba) Billabong or Djarradjin Billabong.

A boat cruise is a fantastic way to view and photograph these beautiful kingfishers.
