One of Kakadu National Park’s grandest waterfalls, Jim Jim Falls will open to visitors from Monday, 27 June 2022, with the majestic Twin Falls Escarpment Walk set to open on the same day.

For tens-of-thousands of years Kakadu’s Traditional Owners, the Bininj / Mungguy have cared for these places of cultural significance and they welcome visitors to share and enjoy their country today.

Kakadu National Park Tourism and Visitor Services Manager Anja Toms said the Wurrkeng season from mid-June to mid-August was a great time to camp, with Karnamarr campground also opening on Monday, 27 June 2022.

“These are breathtaking places. The Twin Falls gorge is closed this year but the Escarpment Walk offers great views of Kakadu while those heading to Jim Jim Falls can experience its giant sandstone gorge,” Ms Toms said.

“At 200m high, Jim Jim Falls is Kakadu’s tallest waterfall with a huge plunge pool surrounded by a dramatic natural amphitheatre for visitors.

“The crisp mornings and cooler temperatures make for high comfort levels at this time of year. Campers at Karnamarr campground can make the most of their days exploring these majestic sites.

“The Jim Jim Creek crossing was raised last year for safer access to the Twin Falls area, however a high clearance 4WD is needed for access. Stopping on the causeway or crossing by foot is not permitted as saltwater (estuarine) crocodiles inhabit the creek.

“Traditional Owners ask that you respect their wishes and stay close to track markers on the escarpment walk and do not continue walking beyond the marked track without a bushwalking permit.”

There is strictly no access to Twin Falls gorge this year. Crocodiles inhabit these waters and visitors must adhere to all signage and follow the directions of Kakadu rangers.
Meanwhile, Budjmi lookout walk and Barrk Marlam walk are forecast to open in late June. For updates on site opening visit the Kakadu Access Report.
