Jim Jim, Maguk and more re-opening at Kakadu
Parks Australia is pleased to announce that popular visitor sites including Jim Jim Falls and Maguk will re-open to visitors at Kakadu National Park from Friday, 3 July 2020.
Director of National Parks, Dr James Findlay said it has been fantastic to have visitors returning to the park over the last few weeks as part of the staged re-opening of Kakadu.
“We are very pleased with the staged re-opening of Kakadu and have found visitors have been doing the right thing when it comes to physical distancing which has given us the confidence to take the next step and open up more locations for visitors to stay and enjoy,” Dr Findlay said.
“From Friday, visitors can access the popular Jim Jim Falls site and the lower pools at Gunlom and Maguk. Jarrangbarnmi (Koolpin Gorge) is also open, however visitors will need to apply for a permit to access this site. Our Permits team have been working with anyone who had applied for a permit prior to the closure.
“Those keen on sleeping out under the stars will be pleased to hear Karnamarr (Garnamarr) and Gunlom campgrounds will also be open from this Friday.
“We want our visitors to enjoy their time in our beautiful park, but we also want to make sure everyone stays safe. The health and safety of our staff, visitors and local community continue to remain our highest priority, so we ask anyone visiting our parks to please practice social distancing and ensure you are maintaining good personal hygiene.
“As we prepare to welcome back visitors from interstate, it’s really important that we maintain these physical distancing practices and we’ll have staff managing sites to ensure there’s no large gatherings.
“Our staff are also continuing additional cleaning of high contact areas, extra hand wash stations are set up at key locations throughout the park and markers have been laid out to assist visitors in observing safety guidelines.”
Almost all areas of Kakadu will be re-open from Friday, with the exception of a few locations which will remain closed for vital infrastructure repairs. The Bowali Visitor Centre will remain closed, along with the walking trail and infinity pool at the top of Gunlom, and Maguk top pools. Twin Falls will also remain closed this season to allow infrastructure upgrades to the Jim Jim Creek crossing.
