The Passing of Mr M Markham - Statement from Parks Australia and Director of National Parks
Kakadu National Park and the Director of National Parks would like to pass on sincere condolences to the family of Mr Mick Markham, who sadly passed away on 24 September 2021.
Mr Markham was a senior traditional Elder of the Jawoyn Bolmo clan from the southern region of Kakadu and Chairperson of the Gunlom Aboriginal Land Trust. Mr Markam was also the Chairperson of the Kakadu Board of Management for several years and a valued partner in the joint management of Kakadu National Park.
Mr Markham had a strong vision for Kakadu and contributed significantly to the management of the park over many years. He was involved in the establishment and ongoing management of the Kakadu Indigenous Ranger Program and was a key driver of the Wurrk Carbon Project in the southern end of Kakadu. Mr Markham also spent many years supporting employment and business development for his local community.
Mr Markham’s legacy and passion for looking after Country and Culture will be remembered and treasured for many generations to come.
