One of Kakadu’s standout fishing spots, particularly for the NT’s iconic barramundi.

Whether you want to try your luck for a barra, or simply cast off and leave your troubles on the shore, the East Alligator River will not disappoint.

Launch from the boat ramps either side of Cahills Crossing and head out on a true Kakadu experience. The East Alligator delivers epic escarpments, wide floodplains and lots of local wildlife. Just be sure to keep a lookout for submerged stumps, sandbars and the ever-present crocs.

Tip: The upstream section of the river is accessible all year round.

Keen to see what’s biting? The downstream section of the river is ideal for barra fishing in the run-off season (February to April), when all the little creeks coming off the floodplain are dumping baitfish into the river.

Looking for an out-of-the-way adventure?

If you have the time and the right gear, you can venture downstream to the mouth of the East Alligator River. At 70–80 km, it’s a long trip, but you’ll be heading out to the spectacular scenery of the open ocean and Kakadu’s Kularri (Point Farewell).

There you’ll have the added thrill of trying for reef fish and pelagics like golden snapper and black jewfish.

You’ll need the right safety equipment for open waters and a boat that’s big enough to handle the coastal conditions – plus a fuel tank big enough to get you back again!

Tours

Fish the magnificent upstream side of Cahills Crossing on a half or full-day tour with Kakadu Fishing Tours. Discover Kakadu’s waterways and wildlife, and have a go at luring a big barra.
