Twin Falls Gorge walk

Twin Falls Gorge walk

The walk to the base of the gorge is currently closed for a major infrastructure upgrade. Experience the falls from above on the Twin Falls plateau walk.

Dramatic scenery leads to a white, sandy beach and plunge pool. Settle down for a picnic here and feel your cares melt away.

The gorge can only be accessed during the dry season, when the waterfall slows to a trickle.

Take a scenic flight over the falls during the tropical summer to see them in their full thundering glory.

Wildlife

Access is via a shuttle boat. Drift through the gorge while your guide points out the ancient secrets of the escarpments and a fantastic array of aquatic life. In the crystal-clear water are barramundi, saratoga, black bream, rainbow fish, long-necked turtles, Mertens water monitors, freshwater crocodiles and the elusive pig-nosed turtle (warradjan).

After you dock, follow the creek upstream over rocks and boulders and along the floating boardwalk while taking in the grandeur of the massive 150 m escarpments.

Culture

As you walk up the gorge, you might hear the white-lined honeyeater calling out to let the spirits know you are coming.

Getting there

The walk to the base of the gorge is currently closed for a major infrastructure upgrade. However you can experience the falls from above on the Twin Falls plateau walk – a challenging 6 km return hike with jaw-dropping views down into the gorge and across to remote, unspoilt wilderness.

Tickets can be purchased at the Bowali Visitor Centre and Karnamarr campground.

You will need a high-clearance 4WD with snorkel due to the deep water crossing at Jim Jim Creek. Allow half an hour each way from Jim Jim Falls. Please adhere to speed limits and drive safely.

4WD tours are available to Jim Jim and Twin Falls during the dry season.
