Injalak Arts Rock Art Tours

Spend time in the company of an expert local guide whose ancestors have lived in the region for millennia.

Only five minutes drive from Gunbalanya, Injalak Hill is home to numerous rock art shelters that have been home to Kunwinjku people since time immemorial. The shelters and rock walls are decorated with thousands of ancient ochre paintings.

Learn the stories of how the ancestors created the landscape and its inhabitants. West Arnhem Land is home to the distinctive ‘x-ray’ style art. See rock art that has been made famous on the one dollar note and in international publications.

Itinerary

Arrive 8.45 am for a 9 am departure from Injalak Arts Centre to Injalak Hill. Walking time is approximately 2.5–3 hours. Most of the tour is in shade. Tour includes panoramic views across the flood plains and to Arnhem Land escarpment.

Before and after the tour, guests can spend time at Injalak Arts where they are able to observe and interact with our members painting and weaving on-site. The print workshop is also active producing numerous high quality hand-printed l8 metre table lengths per day in more than 40 designs by male and female artists.

There is a shop and gallery where locally produced authentic Aboriginal art can be viewed and purchased.

Permits

Permits to visit Gunbalanya must be arranged in advance via the Northern Land Council in Darwin or Jabiru.
