These stunning parrots are seen in small groups throughout Kakadu’s eucalypt woodlands.

What it looks like

This distinctive bird is vibrant green with crimson wings and grows to be about 32 cm tall. The male has more red than the female.

Where to see it

Look for it in savanna woodlands and lowlands, where it is usually found in pairs or flocks. Particularly good spots are Jabiru Lake and Mardukal Billabong near Cooinda.

Behaviour

Red-winged parrots forage for nectar, seeds, fruits and insects. Once disturbed they will quickly take flight with a sharp, alarming call.

Aprosmictus erythropterus
