Cahills Crossing construction open for tender
Parks Australia is seeking submissions to tender for exciting new upgrades to the Cahills Crossing Viewing Platform area in Kakadu National Park.
The revitalisation of this popular attraction will make it much safer for visitors to view and snap photographs of crocodiles gathering at the crossing, with two new viewing decks and a new forest walking trail to be built.
Detailed plans for the site were recently approved by the area’s Traditional Owners and signed off by the Northern Land Council.
The call for tender follows the completion of a design concept by Northern Territory-based architects Troppo and landscape architects TCL, and detailed designs completed by Pritchard Francis in collaboration with Cloustons.
As well as two new viewing platforms, the designs include a picnic area, safer travel paths between the carpark and the main visitor facilities, and replacement of signage for improved visitor information and safety.
The works are part of the Australian Government’s $276 million investment into the upgrade and renewal of infrastructure in our World Heritage-listed park, which is being delivered in consultation with Traditional Owners as part of the Kakadu Tourism Master Plan.
Construction is expected to take around 12-16 weeks with completion currently envisaged by the end of 2021, subject to weather and the availability of materials.
